The History of Subaru
How and When Did Subaru Get Started?
You may be familiar with new Subaru models, but you may not know where the Subaru brand came from or how it got started. Knowing the history of the brand we love so much can help us to better appreciate where Subaru is today. So, let’s dive into the history of Subaru to see just how much things have changed over the years.
The Beginning of Subaru
It may be hard to believe today thanks to the stylish appearance of modern Subaru models, but Subaru actually got its start by branding itself as the “cheap and ugly” car option. It’s true. The first model was named the 360, and it was definitely inexpensive. Honestly, it wasn’t all that great looking either, but it wasn’t meant to be. It was a highly affordable car for the masses.
That was back in 1968, and by 1969, things had already changed considerably for the Subaru brand. That year, Subaru introduced the FF1, which was quite a development in Japan, as it was the first front-wheel drive car. Though it may not be considered a “stunning” car by today’s design standards, it was definitely a major improvement compared to the 360.
Subaru’s First 4WD Car in the US
Of course, Subaru isn’t known just for having great FWD models these days. Subaru is much more well-known for its 4WD and AWD capabilities.
Subaru first got its start with 4WD mobility with the introduction of the Subaru 4WD wagon in 1975. It was the first 4WD passenger car sold in the US market, so it’s no wonder that Subaru has become so well known for its four-wheel capability. What is surprising, however, is that Subaru has remained at the top of 4WD and AWD technology for so many decades since then.
In 1989, Subaru made history in the US again, this time through a car called the Legacy. The Legacy was the first Subaru model produced in the United States. It was also a huge leap forward when it comes to design, and that is when we first began seeing the stylish design capabilities that we see from Subaru today. In 1993, Subaru took another step forward with its sedans, introducing the Impreza, which is still sold today.
