Subaru Announces Plans for More Hybrid and Electric Vehicles by 2030
What once seemed unrealistic is quickly becoming a reality: hybrid and electric vehicles are taking over, and Subaru plans to play a large role. Subaru executives recently announced their electrification plans for the next seven years by leading the way with battery and EV production. So, what’s to come in the long-term and short-term for Subaru? Find out what we know and what you can expect at Subaru of Auburn in the coming years.
Subaru Electrification Roadmap
Starting next year, Subaru will invest nearly $2 billion toward its strategy. That’s just the start of the automaker’s plans toward their main goal of reducing emissions by 90% by 2050. They’ll start by introducing new hybrid and battery electric vehicles while continuing production of those with an internal combustion engine to bridge the gap during the transition. By 2030, Subaru expects that 40% of its sales will be hybrid and fully electric models while continuing their work to boost fuel efficiency on ICE vehicles.
To meet these short-term goals, Subaru will begin producing its own BEVs at its Japanese plants starting in 2025 with plans to release these in-house models for 2027. In the meantime, Subaru is combining its 1.8L turbocharged SUBARU BOXER engine with hybrid technology, boosting efficiency while retaining performance. We can expect these hybrid engines in models like the Forester and Outback, hopefully by 2025, with more to come in the next few years.
New hybrid and BEV Subaru models will join the Solterra, Subaru’s first fully-electric vehicle. Like the Solterra, all new releases will come with all-wheel drive and off-road performance that Subaru drivers expect. Although the traditional gas-powered engines aren’t going anywhere soon, we can’t wait to see what innovations are coming our way. You’ll still be able to find the models you know and love with the addition of new options based on its current EV. The Solterra is just the start of Subaru’s EV roadmap, serving as the template for coming HEV and BEV Subaru vehicles.
