Subaru Support Sustainability with Upcycling
Subaru has long demonstrated their commitment to sustainability. Partnerships with the National Parks Association and zero-waste manufacturing plants are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what Subaru has accomplished in the eco-friendly realm. With the first EV release and more to come on the horizon, Subaru has come up with one impressive new way to reduce waste and improve sustainable practices.
Subaru Upcycles Unlikely Waste
You might be familiar with Subaru’s line of pet-friendly accessories, made specifically for your model of Subaru. But you can now own – and wear – a piece of Subaru yourself. The bags, made of airbag scrap material, are being sold in Japan for the equivalent of $20. Where other reusable shopping bags might start to show wear and tear, Subaru’s “Marche” bags prove much more durable. Since airbag material needs to be tough to comply with safety regulations and last for years of ownership, it’s the ideal material to use for a shopping bag.
Working with Toyoda Gosei, a Japanese-based global manufacturer of car components, Subaru found a way to make use of what would otherwise be trash. Leftover airbag scraps are sewn into sturdy bags that are naturally resistant to heat and water. The light blue bags are finished with blue or red and pink stripes with reflective material for additional visibility and safety. With enough space to fit anything from a full-sized towel to your groceries, the roomy bags are versatile enough to carry with you every day. Best of all, the bags can easily be folded down to pocket-size for convenient use, ensuring you always have a reusable bag when you need one.
Will these repurposed airbag shopping bags be available in the United States? For now, they’re only available in Japan. But there are other ways that you can be a part of Subaru’s mission to Love the Earth. When you drive a 2023 Subaru Outback Onyx Edition, you’ll find unique StarTex seating upholstery. It’s made of 25% recycled materials; plus, it’s water-repellant and highly durable to take you through years of Subaru ownership. Outfit any Subaru model in custom Subaru accessories that are made to last, reducing landfill waste. Accessories can be ordered through Subaru of Auburn’s website, and we’ll even install them for you!
