The Ascent is a relatively new addition to Subaru’s lineup, having joined the catalog in 2019. It took the Tribeca’s place as the automaker’s only three-row SUV, and it remains an excellent choice for families today. With seating for up to eight people, the Ascent is best for growing families and people needing to transport loads of gear. It’s Subaru’s largest SUV in passenger volume but is tied with the Outback on cargo.

The Outback has grown into a formidable wagon with a cavernous interior and plenty of cargo space. That it’s tied with the larger Ascent in cargo is a significant selling point, and the Outback’s long cargo space makes it great for carrying large cargo and even large dogs. Subaru also offers a more rugged Wilderness model with beefier tires and more aggressive styling for folks wanting some light off-road capability.

Subaru Forester Parked Side View in a Park

The Forester is a more upright and traditional SUV-shaped Subaru than the Outback, and its tall roof makes it ideal for taller cargo and adults. There’s great space across both rows of seating, but a family of four and all the accompanying gear will max it out quickly.

Subaru Solterra Parked Front 3/4 View on a Rocky Beach

The Solterra is a great choice for small families wanting to save on gas and emissions. It’s slightly smaller than the Forester but offers more interior space than the Crosstrek, and its wide, open load floor makes getting gear in and out much easier.

The Crosstrek is Subaru’s smallest SUV, but it offers more interior passenger space than the Soterra and still delivers a strong cargo space measurement for its size. Its rear seats fold flat to load oddly shaped or longer items, and its large rear door makes loading and unloading a breeze.
