Subaru Dominates IIHS & Consumer Reports 2023 Teen Driver Vehicle Recommendation List

Typically when we’re looking at something the IIHS has released, it’s the crashworthiness ratings the organization hands out after putting vehicles through a battery of safety tests. Subaru received plenty of great scores on those tests this year, but now the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has released a new set of awards, this time in partnership with Consumer Reports. The two organizations joined forces to create their 2023 Teen Driver Vehicle Recommendation List, and we’re pleased to state that Subaru dominated the list.

What does the list entail?
As graduation season is upon us, a lot of organizations across industries are focused on helping teenagers and their parents through the transition from high school to college. The automotive industry, especially, is an area that needs extra attention. A lot of these teens will need a vehicle before they take off for college, and parents certainly want to make sure they’re getting one that’s right for teen drivers. But this list isn’t just for older teens heading off to college, these vehicles are also great for brand-new teen drivers and the like as well.
The list is actually split into two separate lists, one for new vehicles and one for used. The list of new vehicles includes 16 models, while used includes 46. The Subaru brand managed to get four models on each list for a total of eight vehicles on the 2023 Teen Driver Vehicle Recommendation List! The list takes many things into consideration, including safety ratings from the IIHS and data from Consumer Reports as well. To be more specific, they look at the vehicle’s type and size, how reliable and safe it is, how it handles in emergencies and how it performs when braking, as well as the rates of insurance claims among other things.
Which vehicles made the lists?
For the new list, four 2023 model year Subaru vehicles made the list. This includes one car – the Legacy – and three crossovers – Ascent, Forester and Outback. When it comes to used models, the Legacy, Outback and Forester also make the cut. For the Legacy, it includes 2013-2021 models built after August 2012. For the Outback, models from 2015 to 2018 and then 2022. For the Forester, any model built since 2018. Instead of the Ascent, which is still a relatively young model, the Subaru Impreza made the cut. Either 4- or 5-door models from the 2018 or 2022 model years.
